I want to wax my snowboard, but I don't know if the base is sintered or extruded. I can't really figure it out, please tell me how to tell. The board is a Burton Joystick. I've been riding for years, but always used rub on wax until now, might hot wax it tomorrow. if it is extruded, should I still hot wax it? Thanks and if you have any other tips please share.

Sintered bases absorb more wax and hold it better, but their performance will suffer to a greater degree if they are not frequently waxed.

Extruded bases do not absorb as much wax and do not hold wax as well as sintered bases, but if they are not waxed regularly their performance will not suffer as much as a sintered base's performance will.

Some people think that hot waxing an extruded base is a waste of wax, but even an extruded base likes a hot wax every now and then. Sintered bases need hot waxes more often, since they're designed to secrete wax as you ride and will lose speed more rapidly as the wax depletes. Extruded bases don't need hot waxes as often as sintered bases because they don't lose as much speed when their wax wears off, but an occasional hot wax (or even a good buff wax every so often) is still a good idea.

No matter if your board is extruded or sintered, hot waxing is going to be good for it.

If you have a sintered base, it is likely to hold the wax a bit better and won't need waxing as often as a cheaper extruded base.

Easiest way is to go to Burton's website and find the board. It's sintered.
