Good answer Gfmw.
Another thing to remember is that you will be able to balance better if you hit the rails faster. A big mistake most rail newb's make is they go too slowly and can't complete the entire rail and then they lose balance and fall off. A little speed, like in the above example about the bike, will help you balance easier. Also, it is important to start small and work your way up. Do not start on the 40 foot flat-down-flat rail. Start on smaller boxes and then move up from there. If the resort has double, or triple barrel rails those are great to use as you can get comfortable with the speed needed and the balance is much easier on those.

There's no way one can teach you how to best balance on the rail. It's kind of like when you're on a bike and no one can tell you how to do it right. However, always look forward and once on the rail, focus your attention at the end of rail. Should you slip off the rail halfway or in between, just follow through as though you were at end of rail and ride off it as normal. DO NOT try to balance it back or else you will fall badly.
REMEMBER to wear a helmet and other protection gears like knee & elbow pads, wrist guards, spinal and buttock protection gears, at all times. Safety first.
