If you fly to Denver you can get big discounts on lift tickets at A-basin (outside of Denver) on Liftopia: http://www.liftopia.com/index.php

Colorado has some of the best mountains in the States, you should definitely check it out. And not all of them are huge and expensive. Right now I live in Calgary, AB, but in two weeks I'm moving to work at a hill in Colorado called Arapahoe Basin, and lift tickets are only $37 bucks. However, your bigger costs are gonna come with things like lodging and rental of equipment. You can't get around the rental fee, but I would reccommend checking out the Alpen Hutte hostel for cheap lodging. Good luck!

I can't comment on the costs involved in getting to or staying at your destination but when you get to the resort be sure to get a lesson package. People will tell you that it is cheaper to rent your equipment before you get to the ski resort and, for the most part, that is usually correct.....if you just need equipment. Most resorts offer lesson packages that will include lessons, rentals and a lift ticket and greatly reduced rates. This is almost always the cheapest way to get your foot in the door.

Where do you live? Are you looking to go somewhere local, or do you want to travel? What time of year do you want to go (I realize "winter" is the answer to that, but some places are better at different times of the winter). Do you plan to take lessons, or will you try to learn on your own? Do you want to stay right on the mountain?

Just go to a hill that is close to where you live, even if it's not the biggest or the best

Depends where you live.
